Periodontal surgeries we perform at our Oakville dental office include:
Pocket Reduction Therapy
Severe gum disease and bacterial build up cause your gums to de-attach from your teeth and bone, creating periodontal pockets. If our experienced and trusted Oakville dentist assesses the depth of your pockets to be greater than 3mm, surgical pocket reduction therapy may be necessary. A pocket reduction procedure involves folding back the gum tissue from the teeth to allow for the removal of the disease-causing bacteria. If any irregular surfaces of damaged bone are found, they will be smoothed to limit the areas where bacteria can hide and to allow for a better re-attachment of gum tissue to healthy bone. The gum tissue is finally secured back into its original place with sutures and left to heal for 7 to 14 days, after which Dr. Sarafov will ask to see you for a follow up appointment.
Gum Grafts
Gum grafts are sometimes performed to improve a person’s smile from an aesthetics’ point of view, but it is mostly done to treat gum recession cases. Advanced gum disease may cause your gums to pull away from your teeth, exposing more of the tooth or the tooth’s root. This leads to having loose teeth and potentially tooth loss. Before it gets that extreme, we try to secure the tooth’s stability again with more gum tissue by removing a piece of tissue from the palate and attaching it to the gum area being treated. There can be different sources for the soft tissue being attached to the treated area. Dr. Sarafov will give you all your options and explain them all thoroughly to help you make an informed decision. You will be able to go on with your regular life the following day after the procedure, however, your gum tissue may take several weeks to heal properly.
Gum Lifts
Gum lifts are mostly considered for cosmetic reasons. Oftentimes, people with gummy smiles are unhappy with their smile. To correct excessively gummy smiles, our trusted Bronte dentist reshapes the gums to uncover more of the tooth’s surface and bring balance to your smile. This procedure is also known as “Crown Lengthening”. Dr. Sarafov carefully creates flaps around the teeth and removes the excess soft tissue, reshaping the tissue to expose more of the tooth. Gum lift procedures are quick and simple procedures with a short recovery time. Our caring dentist will spend all the time necessary prior to the procedure to explain the whole process in details and answer all your questions.

Peridontal Surgery
Periodontal surgery is performed to restore and regenerate the form and function of lost or damaged gum tissue. At Bronte Village Dental Office, we offer several periodontal surgical procedures that can:
- Treat periodontal deformities

- Reconstruct gum lines and periodontal tissue attachment to the teeth
Proper hygiene practices and regular professional periodontal care are essential for the treatment of periodontal disease and aim at controlling its main cause, which is the build-up of microbial dental plaque on the teeth and under the gum line. The purpose of any periodontal surgery thereafter is the treatment of any damage caused by the disease.
During your consultation with Dr. Sarafov, she’ll assess your needs, see the extent of damage caused to your teeth and gum tissue and she’ll recommend the appropriate treatment plan options for you. She discusses all your options in detail, making sure you understand and are comfortable with the process and the treatment plan. She takes all the time needed to answer all your questions and make you feel re-assured, relaxed and at ease with the plan.
